Renewable Energy Tax Credits

Under the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018, the renewable energy tax credits for fuel cells, small wind turbines, and geothermal heat pumps now feature a gradual step down in the credit value, the same as those for solar energy systems.

    Tax Credit:
  • 30% for systems placed in service by 12/31/2019
  • 26% for systems placed in service after 12/31/2019 and before 01/01/2021
  • 22% for systems placed in service after 12/31/2020 and before 01/01/2022
  • Expires: December 31, 2021
  • Details: Existing homes and new construction qualify. Both principal residences and second homes qualify.Rentals do not qualify.

Geothermal Heat Pumps

Geothermal heat pumps (GHPs) are among the most efficient and comfortable heating and cooling technologies currently available, because they use the earth's natural heat to provide heating, cooling, and often, water heating.

ENERGY STAR certified geothermal heat pumps:

  • over 45 percent more energy efficient than standard options.
  • include water-to-water GHPs. Water-to-water GHPs provide space conditioning and/or domestic water heating using indoor refrigerant-to-water heat exchangers.

Earning the ENERGY STAR means products meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. By choosing ENERGY STAR certified heating and cooling equipment and taking steps to optimize its performance, you can enhance the comfort of your home while saving energy. Saving energy helps you save money on utility bills and protect our climate by helping prevent harmful carbon pollution and reducing other greenhouse gases.

Geothermal component explanation and  maintenance

Geothermal component explanation and  maintenance

Maintaining your geothermal system is required to insure efficient operation and long life
Understanding the components for a geothermal system and the essential maintenance required
  • Geothermal loop Feild
    • This is the component of your system that contains the heat absorbing transfer fluid and is responsible for the heat transfer from a building to the earth
    • The condition of this fluid needs to be checked periodically for freeze protection levels, leaks and proper heat transfer
    • Proper level or pressure needs to confirmed
  • Loop field pump(S)
    • This component circulates the transfer fluid from the geothermal loop field to the geothermal heat pump system
    • The pump (s) need to be checked for proper operation and for secure electrical connections*
  • Geothermal Unit
    • This the heart of the system, it is responsible generating the heat that will be moved between the earth and the building (absorbs heat from the building in the summer and moves it to the earth ) (absorbs heat from the earth in the summer, uses the compressor along with the refrigerant to increase the temperature to heat the building in the winter
    • The refrigerant needs to be checked periodically to insure proper operation
    • The motors and capacitors need to be checked to prevent premature failure
    • Filter replacement may be required several times a year depending upon your filter size and the building environment
    • Indoor coil may need to be washed out if there is not a good filtering system of if there are pets in the home
    • Electrical connections should be checked to insure there are no loose connections
    • Back up resistance heat system should be tested for proper operation and for loose connections
    • Check the heat of rejection to confirm the geothermal and loop field are working efficiently
    • Check pump operation if your geothermal system is used for hydronic heating
  • Thermostat (Zone control system where applicable )
    • Your thermostat regulates the temperature of the building and is also responsible for initiating the back up heat source
    • You should avoid using setback when you are in the heat mode, sudden temperature fluctuations may cause the backup heat to initiate and your cost of operation may go up considerably, if you use set back in the heating mode make sure your thermostat is set for smart recovery so that it will keep the back up heat from coming on so rapidly. Many thermostats are designed for comfort and do not have this feature.
    • If you use setback in the cooling mode you may notice that the humidity will be higher depending on your location
    • If you have a zone system the dampers need to be checked for proper operation and insure that the zones are not too small restricting the airflow (poor airflow can cause compressor failures)
